Piercing: Recognizing quality and understanding its importance

Rédigé par : Naald Piercing | Dernière mise à jour : 04 Mar 25

With the vast selection of piercings available to us on the internet, it is difficult to differentiate between piercing jewelry that is truly good quality and the others.

A poor piercing can have serious repercussions like causing infection, allergies, it can also change color, cause rejection, migration and the list goes on.

To help you determine whether you are looking for a suitable piercing or not, we have drawn up a list of basic but essential criteria. When you know what you are looking for, you will see that it is not that complicated to determine a low-end item. We will even give you an example of what you should definitely not buy. Those who realize that we have taken as an example one of the biggest trendy sites that sells you one of the worst quality there is, risk falling from a great height.

Ready to find out if a piercing is worth it for you? Let's get started!

How do you know if a piercing is good quality or not?

How do you determine if a piercing has all the characteristics of a good piercing? Whether it's for your belly button, nose, tongue, ear or nipple, you have to make the right choice for your body.

Based on the recommendations of the APP (Association of Professional Piercers), there are 4 key criteria for defining a good piercing jewel:

  • The matter
The material that makes up the piercing is obviously a crucial element in determining whether we are dealing with a piercing that deserves our attention or not. In fact, it is even the first criterion to take into account.
You can choose between titanium, niobium, platinum, gold, silver, glass and finally, steel. Each must meet very specific safety standards. We have also written a great article on the subject: What material for a piercing?
To make a long story short, the top materials are: platinum, titanium, niobium and finally steel.
The most commonly used ones will be titanium and steel.
When it comes to titanium, you have very little risk of having a mediocre piercing. Titanium is, by default, one of the best materials for piercings, it is clearly the GOAT. Steel, on the other hand, does not cost much to produce and will generally be less expensive than a titanium piercing.
Be careful though, as the steels are VERY different from each other, we can only recommend that you stay as far away as possible from all steels that are not expressly indicated as being 316LVM grade steel or at worst 316L steel.
Here is a typical example of a piercing to avoid without thinking: This image comes from one of the biggest piercing sales sites of the moment. The grade of steel used to make their products is grade 304. The particularity of this steel is that it is not expensive (about 25% cheaper than 316L steel) and mixed with chrome and nickel to make it stainless. Exactly what you should not find in a piercing since it is one of the least qualitative steels there is.
Poor quality piercing ring for a tragus, helix, nostril or ear in general.
How to take the consumer for a fool or write in black and white that one is incompetent in one's profession, it's as one wishes. Typically the last thing one would want to put on one's nose, tongue, helix or any part of one's anatomy.

Its creator took advantage of the lockdown to make herself known and develop her piercing business. She has been very successful since then and that is a good thing for her. On the other hand, for you, this means that no safety standards have been taught to her, so she is content to offer you very low-end jewelry at almost the price of titanium jewelry.
Basically, she is selling you one of the worst possible qualities at the price of jewelry that, itself, meets all the required safety standards .

  • Mirror finish
The material is not the only element to take into account. The mirror finish of a piercing is also very important since it is through this process that your ring or labret will become perfectly smooth, without burrs, scratches or traces of machining.
In other words, with a mirror finish we avoid all irritations that are due to friction, we also avoid having microscopic cracks within the piercing itself which will very quickly turn into a nest of bacteria or cause growths, very easily created, in particular on the nose and the ear.
  • Thermal treatment

Another factor to consider is the heat treatment of the jewelry. Annealing is a process that makes the metal more malleable, making it easier to insert and remove the jewelry. Poor jewelry is often not annealed, which can make it difficult to handle and increase the risk of damage and micro injuries.

  • Internal thread

Finally, last but not least, internal threading is an often overlooked aspect of piercing jewelry. With internal threading, the thread is located inside the jewelry, which helps avoid having the grooves of the thread pass through the channel of your piercing and come into direct contact with the scar tissue that is forming. Jewelry with external threading is less sophisticated, less comfortable, and more irritating.

The ultimate piercing for your body, the perfect combo, would be a flat-bottomed, round labret in ASTM F-136 grade titanium with internal threading, mirror finish and heat treatment. Oh wait, isn't that exactly what we're offering you? And be careful, we're not saying that these piercings are perfect because we sell them, it's precisely because they're perfect that we've chosen to offer them to you. It's not for nothing that she's a real professional piercer who got tired of removing the same trendy jewelry from the same brand from her clients' ears.

The importance of quality in a piercing

Well, now that we've seen how to quickly determine if we're dealing with a quality piercing , let's see together why it's important.

"But wait a minute, everyone knows that it's important. Especially when our own health is at stake," the most perceptive among you will tell us. Well, it seems that not everyone is aware of this, especially when you see the number of people who praise certain brands that offer items that can cause violent allergic reactions.

"I don't understand, my tongue piercing still hasn't healed", beyond the fact that care is often poorly applied, another very common cause for prolonged healing is a low-end piercing.

"My nose piercing is all irritated" first most common reason: (unnecessary) use of disinfectant, second probable cause: a piercing that doesn't have a mirror finish.
And there you have it, the machining marks that have turned into a nest of bacteria and that probably irritate the canal in the process (ha and we remind you that we do not put a ring on a nostril until it is healed, neither on the helix nor on the conch). "My helix / tragus / ear hurts, even after several months" we make sure to apply the care correctly, if this is the case, we opt for a titanium labret of grade ASTM F-136. Still no ring.

Yes, ladies, gentlemen, human beings, and other [insert your pronoun here], quality matters because it will allow you to avoid a considerable number of problems. In fact, deliberately choosing to buy your jewelry on a specific site because certain influencers are paid to promote it, without trying to find out for yourself whether the site is trustworthy or not, is deliberately choosing to waste your money in the hope of having as many problems as possible with your piercing and your health.

A low-end piercing can cause:

  • (Severe) allergic reactions
  • An infection
  • Irritations
  • Change color by oxidizing (1st sign of a low-end piercing)
  • Simply prevent your piercing from healing

If, on the other hand, you care about your health and your piercings, and you don't want to have an allergic reaction this summer at the beach and show everyone your beautiful red and irritated belly button, opt for peace of mind. Of course, even if some people don't hold back from multiplying their purchase price by 20 or 30 to set their own price and give the illusion of luxury, most of the time a steel piercing will be much cheaper than a titanium one. But when you know what bad steel can trigger, is it so expensive to pay for €30 titanium when your peace of mind is at stake?

Conclusion

The quality of piercing jewelry is therefore essential for your health and comfort. The raw material that is used for the manufacture of a piercing jewel, the finishes it receives (mirror polishing, internal threading, heat treatment) are all criteria to take into account to determine if you are faced with a good piercing or if you are being led to believe so. A low-end piercing is very likely to cause you big problems, or even lead you directly to the emergency room.

Don’t be lured by cheap and low-end jewelry. Even if you see the ad 34 times a day on Instagram for “original creations” or fabulous “compositions”. Opt for materials known for their quality in the field of piercing, such as titanium, to be sure to receive an item that will not harm you. Your body deserves the best, so invest in quality piercing jewelry and enjoy your beloved piercings with confidence.

If you don't want to take any risks, opt for a titanium piercing of ASTM F136 grade, regardless of the location of your piercing (belly button, tragus, nose, tongue, ear, nipple).
