Piercings and pregnancy: What you need to know 🤰

Pregnancy is nine months of upheaval, emotions, and changes (sometimes visible, sometimes much less so). And for people who wear piercings or are thinking of getting one during this period, one question often comes up: is it really compatible?

We'll help you see things more clearly. ✨

Is it possible to get a piercing during pregnancy?

To be perfectly clear: it's not recommended. During pregnancy, the body already has a lot to deal with, and clearly more urgent matters than the healing of a new piercing. Even if some locations like the ear or nose might seem harmless, pregnancy slightly weakens the immune system. This can increase the risk of infection or poor healing.

Not to mention that the skin is often more reactive during this period (thanks to hormones): irritations, allergies and discomfort can occur where normally everything is fine.

The case of navel piercing

A growing belly is beautiful. But for a belly button piercing, it's a challenge. The skin stretches, and the hole can enlarge or become irritated. If you want to keep it, consider a special pregnancy jewelry: flexible, made of bioplastic, and designed to move with your body without pulling on the skin.

And the nipples?

Good news: they can generally stay in place during pregnancy. However, you may need to adjust the size of the bars if your breasts change significantly. If you plan to breastfeed, though, you'll need to remember to remove the jewelry before each feeding to avoid any risk of choking or injury. There are models that are easy to remove and replace.

How to care for your piercings during pregnancy?

The rules remain the same as usual: no harsh disinfectants, no alcohol, no Biseptine or miracle plant-based solutions. Saline solution and gentle cleansing are perfectly sufficient.

If you have any doubts, discomfort, or persistent redness, consult a doctor. And in case of infection, don't delay. Remove the jewelry, treat the affected area, and seek professional advice.

Should you remove your old piercings?

Not necessarily. But you should keep an eye on it. For the navel, as mentioned above, it's best to switch to a softer piece of jewelry as the skin stretches. For other piercings, as long as they're well healed, not bothersome, and not inflamed… there's no need to touch them.

Pay attention to friction, changes in body shape, and anything else that could cause irritation. And always keep in mind: if it pulls, itches, reddens, or stings… remove it, observe, and consult a doctor.

Genital piercings: what to do during childbirth?

If you have an intimate piercing, it will need to be removed before delivery. This is a matter of safety and hygiene, especially in the case of a cesarean section. Even in the case of a vaginal delivery, midwives often prefer that everything be removed at the start of labor.

In summary

Piercing and pregnancy are not incompatible, but they require a little more attention, flexibility… and sometimes compromise.

Don't take any unnecessary risks: your comfort and health always come first. And if you have any doubts, a professional will be able to guide you.

And of course, if you'd like to revisit the question after giving birth: we'll always be here to help you gently ease back into your jewelry collection. 💜
