Which jewelry to choose for a helix piercing?

The choice of jewelry depends primarily on the stage you're at: initial piercing right after the procedure, downsize once swelling has reduced, or a permanent change once the piercing is fully healed. These three stages do not call for the same jewelry.

Rings or labrets for the helix?

A flat-back labret is always recommended for the initial piercing: it doesn't move, doesn't snag, and allows the cartilage to heal without friction. Once the piercing is stabilized, you can switch to a thin helix ring or a more elaborate piece of jewelry depending on your style.

Helix variations: which jewelry for which placement?

The helix actually covers several distinct placements on the cartilage, and each has its specific features:

  • Upper helix - the classic placement, on the upper rim. 6–8 mm labrets or Ø 8–10 mm rings.
  • Low helix - just above the lobe. The most accessible, often the first cartilage pierced.
  • Mid helix (middle helix) - between the low and high helix, ideal for double or triple compositions.
  • Hidden helix (floating helix) - the jewelry is placed in a fold of the cartilage for a "suspended jewelry" effect. Learn more about the hidden helix →
  • Double and triple helix - two or three piercings aligned on the same cartilage, for a structured and radiant composition.

Healing: what you need to know before changing jewelry

A helix piercing heals in 3 to 9 months depending on the person and the care provided, often longer than one might think, as the outside may appear healed long before the inside of the channel is stabilized. A few benchmarks:

  • First few weeks: do not touch, do not sleep on it, clean twice a day with a saline solution.
  • Downsize (6–8 weeks): replace the initial jewelry (often too long) with a better-fitting length - ideally with the help of your piercer.
  • Permanent change: when the channel is stable, with no tenderness at rest. This is when rings and more elaborate jewelry truly become comfortable.

Piercings compatible with helix jewelry

Most of the jewelry in this collection (1.2 mm labrets, Ø 8–10 mm rings) are also compatible with other cartilage placements:

  • Tragus - same dimensions as the helix in most cases.
  • Conch - for labrets, check stem length according to cartilage thickness.
  • Lobe - thin rings and helix labrets are often suitable for the lobe too.

If in doubt about the size, refer to the size guide above or consult your piercer.
